Why do we insist on the name Adopted Church?
We view ourselves as a family. We are primarily the Family of God. We are the Church.
Adopted families are different from other kinds of families. They are not tied together by blood relations, or a common ancestry. They are bound together by Spirit. The Adopted Church means to be a family full of different people who all belong to the Spirit of God, and are bound to one another by His grace.
Scripturally, there is plenty of weight behind this name. Jesus was adopted into the human family by His father Joseph. The human race has been adopted by God through Jesus. The Bible tells us that as we receive salvation and the work of the Spirit, our hearts cry out to God as our Father (Galatians 4, Ephesians 1). We seek to be the kind of people who respond to God’s adoption.
Adopted family members often look very different from one another. We embrace the many different physical and spiritual heritages we have, and know that God has called us to care and serve one another.
We claim the name “Adopted Church” because we care for one another as family. We also love to bring people in, and be the family to belong to. Furthermore, we hope that one day all Christians will be able to adopt one another beyond denominational or tribal borders.
What is the mission or purpose of the Adopted Church?
Our mission and purpose is to produce martyrs.
The Adopted church exists to be the Family of God. We are the Bride of Christ, the Body of Christ. Our purpose is a relationship, and not a task: our purpose is people. The Adopted Church exists to produce the kind of Christians who have died to self and sin; who pick up their cross and follow Jesus no matter the cost.
We endeavor to be Christians who are unstoppable by evil or cost, determined to obey our Savior and love people even at the expense of our lives.
" And I will be Father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty. "
- 2 Corinthians 6:18
